Understanding the value of Indigenous language revitalization is a transformative insight for community and educational leaders. It inspires them to advocate for and implement language-focused programs and policies. This broader recognition fosters a more positive perception of Indigenous languages, sparking both new and seasoned speakers to engage more actively in speaking and teaching roles.
Sharing
SILR has made significant strides in reaching Indigenous Peoples and communities, helping to develop and execute programs aimed at reviving their languages. Our commitment in the Sharing aspect is to disseminate our findings widely, thereby enhancing the accessibility and effectiveness of language revitalization efforts. This sharing of knowledge not only supports current initiatives but also serves as a beacon for future endeavors, illuminating the path towards a richer, more vibrant linguistic heritage.
Research
The SILR Research Team has produced a video to share the findings from the entitled The Search for Wellness through Ancestral Languages that shares some of the ways in which knowing and speaking one’s Ancestral Language fosters wellbeing (body, minds, spirit and emotions).
The SILR Research team has developed the University of Alberta’s first Data Sovereignty Declaration and Care Taking Directives using a generational lens to protect Indigenous research participants and the information that they share. This is a part of the international conversations around standards for the ways in which Indigenous research and data sovereignty can be practiced in a post-secondary setting and broadly share the research findings and practices.
Evaluation
Evaluation in Indigenous language revitalization is a crucial process that involves assessing the effectiveness and progress of language revival efforts. It aims to empower project partners and communities by developing their capacity to monitor and evaluate their own language revitalization initiatives.
Integral to our programming, evaluation encompasses offering tailored support to communities and organizations. This includes facilitating various evaluation activities like conducting assessments, surveys, and information-gathering sessions. These activities are designed to align with the specific needs and goals of each community, ensuring a tailored approach to track and foster the growth of their language revitalization endeavors.
